Weeping Buddhas

The Weeping Buddha is also known locally in the Far East as a Yogi. A Yogi is a male practitioner of Yoga, and the word is also used to refer to ascetic practitioners of meditation in a number of South Asian Religions. The meditative posture of the weeping Buddha is believed to open and activate the third eye. It is supposed to be a very centering and peaceful posture.

Perhaps the most popular and satisfying story of its origins regards 2 warriors who confronted each other in numerous battles. Wearing armour and masks, they never saw each other’s face until after one final encounter where the elder killed the younger only to discover upon removing his mask that he had killed his long lost son. Filled with great sorrow he started weeping, eventually renouncing violence and hatred and started to travel helping the young, sick, and anyone he found in need. Finding his own Enlightenment he became known as the Weeping Buddha. He is weeping for the troubles of the world, absorbing the common grief. The weeping Buddha cries so no one else has to.
